Question:
Can all lasers treat toenail fungus?
Answer:
No! There are many different types of lasers available to physicians, each treating a different variety of specific conditions. Each condition treated has its own “platform.” These “platforms” are designed to produce specific energy levels made up of varying frequencies and wavelengths. Most lasers are made with multiple “platforms,” which usually coincide with the medical specialty using them. The Cutera GenesisPlus has built in “platforms” to specifically treat toenail fungus, plantar warts, and painful or unsightly scars.
Many lasers are marketed to treat fungal toenails, however, not all lasers are equally effective (some are not effective at all)! The Cutera GenesisPlus 1064 Nd:YAG laser has been used and tested by physicians around the world and consistently outperformed competitors. It has received FDA clearance to treat fungal toenails. Only a few lasers have received clearance to treat this condition
At Columbus Foot & Ankle, we use a strict laser protocol developed to produce a maximum effect. In our office, the laser treatment consists of three sessions lasting about 20-25 minutes each spaced 4-6 weeks apart. We feel it is beneficial to treat all of the nails of any foot with an affected nail to ensure complete elimination of fungal elements. No anesthetic or special preparation is required. During the treatment the patient may feel a sensation of warmth or heat, or occasionally a pinching sensation in the nail but this is not typically painful. There are practically no side effects or complications and the patient leaves the office and is able to immediately carry on with their normal activities. The laser is also safe for all ages and for all medical conditions. Results can generally start being seen in a period of 1-2 months, but it can take some patients up to 9-12 months to grow the affected, damaged nail(s) totally out. We also will only recommend this therapy for candidates who, in our expert opinions, are ideal candidates, or who have exhausted other conservative treatment options.
The Cutera GenesisPlus laser system is also extremely effective in treating plantar warts. The “platform” settings are adjusted to produce to a second unique energy level that is capable of destroying plantar warts in patients of all ages. Recent scientific literature shows that the laser treatment of warts is superior to other traditional treatments, resulting in more complete destruction with fewer recurrences. Typically 1 or 2 treatments are required to completely eliminate the wart. Stubborn cases may need a few more treatments, but that is relatively rare.
Another “platform” of the Cutera GenesisPlus laser is for the treatment of painful or unsightly scars. The scars that respond best are under 6 months old and are caused by injuries or surgical procedures. Multiple sessions are usually required to achieve maximum results.
